Owner has raised $240 million in new financing led by Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives, valuing the technology platform for local businesses at $2.3 billion.

Existing investors Meritech, Redpoint, Headline and Jack Altman also participated in the financing.

Owner is developing an AI-enabled technology and marketing platform for local businesses, initially focusing on independent restaurants.

The platform provides services including websites, online ordering, mobile applications, customer relationship management, customer support, point-of-sale technology and AI-enabled telephone ordering.

Owner describes its proposition as providing local businesses with technology and marketing capabilities that have traditionally been more accessible to large corporations.

The company launched in 2020 and has surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue.

Owner said independent restaurants using its platform are expected to generate more than $1 billion in sales through the technology during 2026.

According to the company, thousands of local businesses now use Owner and more than 100 million American consumers have interacted with the platform.

Owner said its technology now powers more US locations than either Domino's or Taco Bell and that the platform is the highest-rated restaurant technology on Capterra and G2.

Owner's AI agents are designed to build, operate and optimise different elements of a business's digital presence.

For example, a restaurant can instruct the platform to promote a menu item, after which its agents can create the promotion, update the website, develop a campaign, generate creative material and publish it.

The platform can also answer telephone calls, take orders, respond to reviews and emails and provide customer support.

According to Owner, restaurants using the platform increase online traffic by an average of 40% within 30 days of launch.

The company also said the average restaurant increases direct online revenue by more than 40% during its first year, while customers using a restaurant's branded application reorder at twice the rate of customers who do not use the app.

Adam Guild, co-founder and CEO of Owner, said:

“The world is racing to build AI to replace people's jobs. Owner is building AI to do the opposite: to do the jobs many small business owners have never been able to afford.

“Now, for the first time, local restaurants have the same tech advantages as the huge chains they compete with. And soon every small local business, including grocers and salons, will have those advantages too.”

Owner's team includes people with experience at companies including Shopify, DoorDash, Compass, Salesforce and HubSpot.

More than 35 members of the team are former founders, according to the company.

Owner also uses AI within its own product-development processes, with the company saying this allows it to develop products in weeks or months that would previously have taken years.

The company's next stage of growth is expected to include expanding across the US independent restaurant market, entering international markets and extending the platform to additional categories of local business, including salons, spas and independent grocers.
