Two deals in the past twelve months illustrate why Oxfordshire is treated as a genuine centre of gravity in global quantum computing: the largest acquisition of a University of Oxford quantum spinout to date, and a fresh nine-figure US investment into the county.

Oxford Ionics: a $1.075 billion exit to IonQ

Oxford Ionics, founded in 2019 by University of Oxford physicists Dr Chris Ballance and Dr Tom Harty, engineered trapped-ion qubits that can be manufactured on standard semiconductor chips, and held world records for qubit fidelity.

In June 2025, Nasdaq-listed IonQ announced a definitive agreement to acquire Oxford Ionics for $1.075 billion — approximately $1.065 billion in IonQ stock and $10 million in cash. The deal completed in September 2025; the University of Oxford's own Department of Physics described it as the highest-value acquisition of any Oxford quantum computing spinout to date, and both founders remained with the combined company.

Rigetti Computing: a $100 million first move outside the US

In March 2026, Nasdaq-listed Rigetti Computing announced its intention to invest up to $100 million in the UK — its first major investment outside the United States.

The move builds on Rigetti's existing Abingdon presence and its 36-qubit system already deployed at the National Quantum Computing Centre at Harwell, and is aimed at deploying a UK-based system of over 1,000 qubits within three to four years, which the company tied explicitly to the UK Government's national quantum computing programme.
