Key Points

  • Immunocore's KIMMTRAK received FDA approval in January 2022 — the first T-cell receptor therapeutic ever approved by the FDA.
  • KIMMTRAK has since been approved in the EU, UK, Canada and Australia, with five-year overall survival data presented at the 2026 AACR annual meeting.
  • Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Adaptimmune are also based across Milton Park and Oxford Science Park.

Oxfordshire's life sciences cluster has produced one of the genuine landmark moments in UK biotech history, alongside a fast-moving base of AI-driven diagnostics companies.

Immunocore: the world's first approved TCR therapy

Immunocore, founded in 2008 as a spinout of technology developed at the University of Oxford and based at Milton Park, received FDA approval for its drug KIMMTRAK (tebentafusp) in January 2022 for unresectable or metastatic uveal melanoma.

It was the first T-cell receptor (TCR) therapeutic ever approved by the FDA, and the first bispecific T-cell engager approved to treat a solid tumour, based on Phase 3 trial results showing a statistically significant survival benefit over standard treatment.

KIMMTRAK has since been approved in the EU, UK, Canada and Australia, and in March 2026 Immunocore announced it would present five-year overall survival data at the AACR annual meeting — a rare long-term dataset for a first-in-class oncology therapy.

A wider biotech and diagnostics base

Milton Park and Oxford Science Park are also home to Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Adaptimmune, two further Oxfordshire-originated biotechnology companies.

On the AI-diagnostics side, Brainomix's stroke and lung imaging platforms and Caristo Diagnostics' AI cardiac risk tool sit squarely within Oxfordshire's life sciences ecosystem, and the University of Oxford's September 2025 partnership with the Ellison Institute of Technology brings a further £118 million of AI-driven vaccine research funding into the county.
